Yindyamarra is a Wiradjuri word that means to go softly and slowly with honour and respect.

It was taught to us years ago by our friend and Wiradjuri Gamilaraay elder Aunty Sharon mirii Bell and it infuses our daily kindy life - the children use it constantly to describe acts of care, kindness and thoughtfulness towards one another, their families and towards the natural environment.

It is a simple but far-reaching word that truly resonates with children. We thank Aunty Sharron for the gift of Yindyamarra, and we acknowledge all of our elders past, present and future for their knowledge, generosity and commitment to walking together.

Children come to understand Yindyamarra through everyday actions, such as:

  • including others,

  • helping a friend,

  • listening,

  • caring for living things,

  • making thoughtful choices, and

  • taking responsibility when something needs to be put right.

Over time, it becomes a familiar part of how children speak about kindness, respect and belonging.

Families may also begin hearing the word used at home as children recognise Yindyamarra in their own actions.
